The covered list

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism lists more than ten museums and archaeological sites in Nevşehir and Aksaray on the pass. The placemark map embedded on the official e-card page is the source of the exact coverage, because the PDF list on the same page renders as an image that does not print the names in text. The covered doors that matter to a Göreme visitor are the Göreme Open Air Museum, the Dark Church inside it, the Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities, the single combined Zelve and Paşabağ ticket (the chimney fields are covered on our Paşabağ page), the Özkonak underground city, and the İhlara Valley with its Belisırma and Selime entrances (the gorge walk is on İhlara Valley), which means Selime Monastery needs no separate ticket.

Every site allows one entry per card, and each site can be entered only once in the three-day window. One caveat deserves your attention. The e-card page's own map lists the Dark Church as covered, yet an older official page for the physical card still tells holders that the card is not valid there and a separate ticket must be bought.

What more than ten actually means

The marketing line on the official page says more than ten museums and archaeological sites. Count the placemarks on the pass map and you get eleven, and they are not eleven separate days out. The İhlara Valley alone contributes three of them, the main gate at Ihlara village, the Belisırma entrance and the Selime entrance, all entrances of one valley ticket.

Paşabağ carries its own placemark beside the combined Zelve and Paşabağ entry, and Özkonak, the eleventh, is the one the fee list marks closed. Counted as real tickets, the pass covers the six distinct entries in the table below. That gap between the marketing count and the practical count is the single best reason to read the arithmetic before you buy, and it is also why nobody should promise you the pass pays off at site three.

Standalone tickets against the pass

Six distinct ticket types sit behind the pass, and the table prices each at the official gate rate beside its pass status. The Özkonak row is printed because it is sold, not because it can be walked.

Where the break-even sits

All six ticket types bought separately come to $90.60 (€79). The pass costs $74.51 (€65), so a visitor who does everything saves $16.05 (€14). Sort the tickets by price and the pass pays for itself at the fifth distinct ticket type.

The four top tickets, the museum, İhlara, Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, cost $69.90 (€61) and miss the pass price by a single ticket. The fifth takes the standalone bill to $83.70 (€73) and from there the pass wins. Now the honest part.

The classic red-plus-green two-day pair that most visitors actually walk, meaning the museum, Zelve and Paşabağ, Derinkuyu and İhlara, costs $68.80 (€60) standalone. Against the pass that is a loss of $5.73 (€5). Add the Dark Church and the standalone bill rises to $75.70 (€66), which puts the pass ahead by $1.15 (€1).

In other words the card is a coin flip on the standard two-day plan and only clearly wins when you add a fifth and sixth door. Museum hill alone, the museum plus the church, is $29.80 (€26), a quarter of the pass price. On a short trip the pass is simply the wrong purchase.

Buy the pass when

Buy it when your plan fills three full days and crosses the region. A shape that works looks like this. Day one is museum hill, the Göreme Open Air Museum in the morning and the Dark Church inside it.

Day two is Zelve and Paşabağ in the morning, then Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı underground city in the afternoon. Day three is the İhlara Valley, entered at the main gate or walked from the Selime entrance, both covered. That is six distinct ministry doors in three days, worth $90.60 (€79) standalone against a $74.51 (€65) card.

Skip it when

Skip it on a short trip built around museum hill plus one tour day. The museum and the church together cost $29.80 (€26), and a guided day such as the Red and Green combined day tour at $21.07 already carries a licensed guide and the transport. Careful with one detail, the tour price usually does not include the site entries, so read the includes line before you assume anything.

Even adding singles for the underground city, your total sits far below the pass price and the card loses money. Two days in town means two days without the pass, buy singles as you go. Work the numbers into a plan with our two-day itinerary.

Several names that appear in every Cappadocia itinerary are absent from the pass, and some for good reason. Uçhisar Castle is not in the ministry's ticketing system at all. No ministry ticket exists for it, and no official price or hours are published anywhere on a government domain, so the pass cannot cover it, check our Uçhisar Castle page for the current situation.

Devrent Valley has no ticket of any kind, the formations sit in an open landscape and in practice it is free, see Devrent Valley. Çavuşin Church is closed for restoration on its own official page, so nothing covers it right now, updates on Çavuşin. Two evening products are also excluded.

Night Museuming at Göreme costs $4.10 (₺200) and Derinkuyu runs its own night session, and the official pass page states that passes of every kind are not valid at the night entrance, context on the Derinkuyu night visit. Finally El Nazar Church costs $3.44 (€3) on the ministry fee list and simply sits outside the pass list, so you would pay that one separately even holding the card. None of these gaps should change your decision, but none of them should surprise you at a gate either.

The e-card is bought in the muze.gov.tr e-shop. You need an account first, the site will not let you check out without one. The flow is four steps, pick the card and ticket, review the basket, fill in delivery information, purchase.

The physical card is sold at ministry ticket offices, including the office at the Göreme Open Air Museum on Müze Caddesi. Now the part that catches people out. The 3-day validity does not start on the purchase date, it starts at the first entrance, so buying the card online before the trip costs you nothing.

Each site allows exactly one entry per card, plan the order accordingly. The card also carries a 10% discount at museum stores and at the cafes inside ministry sites. Practical advice on making the clock work, start it in the morning.
